As a result of the accident, Mr. Harris sustained a traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (TBI) associated with multiple non-displaced cervical fractures (level C6-T1), acute respiratory failure requiring tracheotomy and mechanical ventilation for life support.

Unable to fully recover in the short stay of a traditional hospital setting, Mr. Harris was transferred to Kindred Hospital Bay Area – Tampa’s ICU on November 19 for extended recovery time and continued care.

Upon admission to Kindred Hospital, Mr. Harris was on mechanical vent with full support (PRVC) and 35% FiO2 assessed with spontaneous eye opening to verbal stimulus only. He was dependent for all function, disoriented, dependent for all care, NPO with PEG for all nutritional support and ASPEN collar for stabilization.

Through the coordinated efforts of the clinical team at Kindred Hospital Bay Area – Tampa, Mr. Harris was discharged after 54 days to an inpatient rehab center for Brain Injury Rehabilitation.

No longer needing an artificial airway support, Mr. Harris was completely decannulated on 100% room air, complete oral diet of mechanical soft with thin liquids. Previously with poor responsiveness to stimuli, an alert and oriented Mr. Harris attained supervision status for hygiene and grooming, minimal assist for all transfers out of bed, independent for mobility in bed. He was ambulating with a rolling walker and moderate physical assistance more than 300 feet.

Mr. Harris expressed his sincere gratitude to the Kindred Hospital Bay Area – Tampa team for “refusing to give up on him.”

He credits his successful recovery to the exceptional care, support, and diligence he received from the Kindred team.
